I didn't try for kissangani as I was hoping to get the train/boat to Llumbumbashi, but it all fell apart. I think the DRC (Zaire) is opening up a little bit now, Blood River is a good read and is about someone retracing H M Stanleys trip to Kinshasa from Bukavu and via Kissangani. I have heard rumours of people getting through more recently, Bradt have even published a guide to Congo and DRC (random!) I don’t know anyone that did but check out the overland network there are some old trips on there.
