Big Clay House

After Rhumsiki I head back uneventfully to Maroua, from here I plan one more trip out to the village of Maga. According to my guide book it is full of unique domed houses made entirely of clay. I arrive at the bus stop at dawn (6am) hoping to catch the first bus, which I do, at about 10am.

We get to Maga, where only I get out of the bus, no unique houses to be seen just yet, I ask around but people just laugh and call me Massara (white man). After quite a bit of wandering I really start to have my doubts, eventually someone points me in the right direction to another village 12k’s down the road, I manage to get there on a moto taxi. Sure enough there is a big clay domed house, but only one, it is the last of its kind. It has been restored well and so looks pretty much brand new, it was interesting to see and the bike driver and myself had a good look around, but from a tourists point of view a shame there is only one left. Development is however also important, after all we stopped living in caves a while ago.

Next up I decide upon a marathon day of travelling, an eight hour bus ride takes me to N’Goundare, the journey should of been less but we ran out of petrol at the top of a hill (I cant remember the last time I was in a bus/car and it didnt brake down). From there I catch an eighteen hour train ride to Yaounde, it should of been less but we broke down, not sure why because I was sleeping. Being quite tired I paid a little extra and got a sleeping cabin, the train was definately a nice way to travel.
