Back to Accra

After a really good and relaxing New Year in Cape Coast we decided it was time to head back into Accra, this time with the car. We said our farewells and exchanged the customary email addresses before heading off. It was also the first time we had had a passenger for a longish distance, a Dutch teacher called Joanna who was going to meet her parents in the city. It felt like we had already been up and down this coast road a few times by now so I was actually quite excited to be seeing some of the recognisable features ie. road works, diversions etc! so off we went. A pretty uneventful journey although good to have another person to talk to instead of having to crank the stereo volume up! We stopped for the customary rice and chicken at Winneba Jct about 30kms outside the Metropolis but went to a different stall to before and so no mix-ups with the orders.(see earlier diary section)

Joanna knew of a place down on High St by the coast to stay and so we decided it would be a good idea to try to stop here also. A pretty basic setup which is currently being renovated but nevertheless they allowed us to pitch our tent on a patch of sand between two buildings so we were happy. One unusual thing about the place however is the fact that the security guard (bullet is his nickname!?) insists that all the toilets and showers be padlocked at all times. This means that you feel like a school boy asking for him to unlock them everytime you need to go. Which over here and after some of the food we eat, is fairly often!

While in Accra we have taken the opportunity to visit the port at Tema where it is possible to ship vehicles etc. and so the nature of the trip may well change over the next couple of weeks. Firstly however we need to get back out along the coast road to the West to explore the surf spots such as Dixcove and Axim.
